Mama Mia! 8 Great Italian Rap Videos
Looking for something fun and unexpected? Watch these Italian rap videos and experience something new.
Nearly a decade ago now, my grandmother passed away. Her parents were Italian immigrants to the United States, and she was the first generation to be born here. As a way of honoring her and my ancestors, I began learning the beautiful Italian language. It’s challenging to learn a whole new way of speaking and thinking. One way I aimed to build my vocabulary and improve my pronunciation was through listening to music. This is how I discovered Italian rap.
Italian rap features clever wordplay, vibrant music videos, and has a unique style. It has a very different sound and aesthetic than American rap. The beats tend to have more electronic elements, and the language lends itself well to rhythmic, rapid-fire rhyming. The music videos are also usually very visually interesting, featuring bright colors, bizarre imagery, and creative sets.
In this post, I’ve collected a handful of my favorite Italian rap music videos for your viewing pleasure. I hope you’ll fall in love with them the way I did so that maybe we can get them to tour here in America—preferably in a city near me.
Enjoy!
Space Invaders
Space Invaders is one of my favorite music videos of all time. How many alien movies do you recognize in the music video? I was able to name a couple. This music video is so bizarre, it brings me so much joy. I hope you get as much of a kick out of it as I did. Warning: there is some minor drug use in this video.
Drippin’ In Milano
Drippin’ In Milano is a very different music video than Space Invaders. This music video is part of a series of music videos. If you enjoy this music video, I suggest hunting down the others. Anna is probably my favorite female Italian rapper. I had trouble picking out which song to share with you, but I love Drippin’ In Milano because it is just so extra.
Siamo Noi
What happens when you get a handful of good friends together? Good times. This song title translates to “We Are”, and it’s a song of friendship. Or at least that’s what I gather from what I’m able to translate of this song.
Mica Van Gogh
Caparezza is a really fun artist, and all his music videos are quite bizarre. I thoroughly enjoyed Mica Van Gogh and wish I could have attended the concert that this video was filmed at because the set is just amazing. This is such a fun song, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.
Iconic
Ensi is one of my favorites. He’s an incredibly talented freestyle rapper—I’ve probably watched a dozen videos of him freestyling—but this video is just gorgeous with the red lighting and the fog.
Dammi Corda
I love this song by Leslie, and I love the yellows and reds in this music video. I used to listen to this song all the time when I lived in Phoenix, and now I can’t listen to it without feeling like I’ve been relaxing by the pool.
Salmo Unplugged
This is, by far, the longest video of the bunch. This is a collection of “unplugged” songs by Salmo, some of his most popular jams. If you don’t have time to watch all the songs, I recommend 90MIN (2:40), La Prima Volta (13:10), and L’ALBA (32:10).
Beba
This isn’t quite a music video, but I love this Italian show that has rappers come and spit their rhymes. This particular episode with the rapper, Beba, is one of my favorites.
What did you think?
I hope you enjoyed this collection of videos. Who was your favorite artist? Who do you think had the best visuals? Who did you jam out to the most? Leave a comment and let me know.
