Apartment Hunt Quest Log: Failed Leasing Offices and Self-Selecting Out
From Baldur's Gate 3 to apartment hunting: When a game pause leads to an unexpected quest for a new home.
My boyfriend heard a strange noise at the door while he was playing the new Baldur’s Gate 3. I take it he’s finally learned how to pause the game, or at least it wasn’t in a cut scene, because he got up and opened the door to investigate the source of the sound.
Someone from the apartment complex stuck a thin, white envelope in our door frame and then left without a knock. My boyfriend retrieved the fallen envelope off the floor and brought it inside. He grabbed his silver letter opener off the table and brought them both to my room.
“I think this is it,” he said ominously.
Like a surgeon making their first incision, he opened the the envelope with the letter opener, peeled its ribcage apart, and removed the papers from inside. It contained two pages of information, and the boyfriend’s eyes darted across the page as he looked for the key facts.
Our apartment complex wanted to let us know they’ll be raising the rent next year by 10%, and they asked if we could kindly let them know whether or not we’re planning to stay by the end of the month.
So we’re moving.
Where? We don’t know, yet.
When? We only vaguely know that.
All I do know is that my plans for the next three months are going right out the window. My new goal for the next couple of months is pack and declutter as much as possible. In the opposite order than stated, of course. And another goal is to keep these posts coming once a week. I’m worried in all that’s going to be happening, this Substack will fall to the wayside. I’m hoping to get ahead so that if I do fall behind, you’ll still get a post in your inbox on Thursdays.
In fact, I’ve spent a little time each day cleaning and decluttering so that when it comes time to pack, I don’t have to worry about transporting things I don’t want. Hopefully this means I won’t feel too claustrophobic if we have to move into a smaller apartment.
Going on an apartment hunt
We did some apartment hunting this weekend. Sort of.
At the first place we drove to check out, no one was at the leasing office despite the sign saying they’d be back by now. We waiting approximately 15 minutes and then we decided to swing back around on our way back.
The second place we went to, too many apartments had window units. We would like to live somewhere with actual air conditioning, so we decided to self select out and go about our day.
At that point, the car’s tank needed refilling, so we went to Costco to fill up and do some shopping. We ended up heading home right after that instead of continuing our hunt.
We did get some ideas for where to look for apartment complexes from this search, so it wasn’t all for naught.
I hate that apartment complexes can do that. My childhood was riddled with it. We moved every year between the ages of six and 14.
Ten percent is obscene.
