The fire alarm rang throughout our apartment complex Monday night due to an electrical fire. It went off again at 1am on Tuesday morning. The dogs shook uncontrollably with fright, and there was very little my boyfriend or I could do to calm them down.
This week, I heard back from the job I interviewed for…they have decided not to fill the position at this time, blah, blah, blah. I’m disappointed, but not as heartbroken as I thought I’d be. Instead, I feel motivated to make some changes and come back even better than before.
Overall, it hasn’t been the best of weeks, but we survived it, and that counts for something.
Positive News
According to an article in The Guardian, a Canadian study has shown that when you give unhoused people money $7,500, they spend the money on housing, transit, clothes, and other necessities. This goes against the idea that if you give unhoused people money, they spend it on drugs, alcohol, and other vices. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/30/canada-study-homeless-money-spending
A non-profit in Seattle is giving up to 150 Indigenous families guaranteed income. The families will receive monthly payments that will begin at pregnancy and continue until the child’s 3rd birthday. This program will help with child and mother mortality rates, and provide the families with some financial security. https://www.thestranger.com/news/2023/09/05/79148858/seattle-nonprofit-launches-first-indigenous-guaranteed-income-program-in-the-us
Pre-K is important for child development and better future outcomes, and now, thanks to a 2021 law, this cost is covered in my home state of California. I hope other states follow suit soon.
Fun Things
Have you ever seen two hippos fighting? It’s quite a sight! Now imagine that you’re at a venue that has outdoor seating, and two hippos break out into a fight mere feet away from where all the tables and chairs are. Imagine standing there calmly while filming the entire scene. I, personally, would be running the opposite direction.

One of my favorite Italian rappers to listen to is Il Tre because he raps SO DARN FAST while still enunciating the words clearly enough that I can understand each word he spits. In this video, he raps one of his songs to the tune of Macklemore’s “Can’t Hold Us”. He also does the same thing to 3 other songs, but I can’t place their origin.
I hope you enjoyed this collection of stories and the two videos I found this week. Did you discover anything wild this week? If so, I’m curious to hear what it is. Let me know in the comments what I should keep an eye out for.
